Frances Madden - new album launch
Great night at the Basement last night, with the launch of her new album, by Frances Madden ... terrific new material; her sensitivity on the piano possibly comes from a classically trained background; there’s
a nod to idol Diana Krall; a quirky Beatles cover, and new material too … much
laughter at the irony that Women don’t pay blues, and then, an original
piece. Her vocals are right on! ... soft, edgy, stirring when she needs to be, but lovely; feminine .. all the
while smiling; placid, elegant. The trumpeter has style, character and polish;
the guitarist is reminiscent of Kenny Burrell, and her former Teacher-sax
player, gave generously to share the shine of the evening’s performance … and
the new album is revealed! …

A moody reverie, after Mingus Big Band, of sultry jazz singers ... some men; some women, and ending with our own home grown talent

Lazy Bones was the venue for the sound of Big Bands on Sunday night; a beautifully controlled Youth Ensemble under the watchful guidance of the powerhouse, and diminutive, Judy Bailey.
The group was extraordinarily well rehearsed. There was an occasional, "yep yeah" from the musicians; the trumpets and saxophones swayed in the front row; the girls held their own, including a walking bass. It was a light hearted revue of the history of the Big Band sound, with a very appreciative audience, and a laughing Judy bailey giving her musicians a thumbs up at the end!
